Walk into any toy store
or departmental shop or a retail outlet, and your mind boggles at the
array of toys on display! Whether you are a new parent or someone with
experience concerning children, you are going to feel tremendously confused
about choosing the right toys for your kids at home. In fact, you might
just go on picking up anything that appeals to you—ultimately, you discover
that you have a mini toy shop at home itself!
Maybe you could keep these few considerations in mind when you go toy
hunting, and things will fall into place—
(1) How old is your toddler? Or do you have children of different ages?
Well, there are “age-appropriate” playthings readily available. The idea
behind play is to improve upon existing skills—for better development.
Based on his/her age, your child should feel challenged by the toys he/she
receives. At the same time, they should not be too difficult to handle.
Therefore, select interesting playthings that will appeal to that particular
age (After all, you were a child too once). Do not buy and store anything
for future use.
(2) Keep your choices “simple”. Do not fall prey to all those sophisticated,
new-fangled devices, however tempting they might be. Simple but well-made
toys consist of fewer parts, providing the advantages of durability and
versatility. The same plaything can be used for holding and touching,
throwing, role play, and so on.
(3) They are basically for entertainment, but toys can do a lot towards
"stimulating the senses of sight, sound, taste and touch". Of
course, these playthings should be well constructed to achieve this. He/She
will understand so much about color, shape and texture just be looking
and feeling the toys. Again, toys are wonderful for developing gross motor
skills and hand-eye coordination. As they grow older, your children will
understand about fine motor control.
(4) Expose your child to "variety" right from an early age.
Let him/her not get stuck with the same old toys of the same kind. Each
new plaything will provide a different experience, and this will get him/her
ready to face the world later on. Somewhere in the sub consciousness,
will the words “possibilities and options” settle in!
(5) More than anything else, you have to pay attention to "safety".
Say, you are buying some toys for your infant. At this age, he/she will
love to kick, pull, throw, drop, bang, bite and chew playthings. So, your
first priority is durability. Otherwise you are exposing your baby to
the risk of choking—any broken parts will end up in the mouth. Again,
ensure that the paint on the toys does not contain toxic materials or
lead. Your baby will ingest these chemicals when he/she chews on the toys.
Dirt and germs can also be swallowed; so get washable stuffed toys. Other
concerns include—avoidance of weighty toys that can fall onto the baby’s
toes or face; avoidance of toys with long strings or ribbons that can
cause strangulation.
(6) Once you are done with your shopping, do not just hand over the toys
to your children and walk away. It is better to "supervise"
the first few times (especially with very young children) and ensure that
the playthings are being handled in the right way and will cause no harm.
