“Modern” children prefer television and video games over everything
else now-a-days. Some even love to keep themselves occupied with their
favorite authors and books. But there will also be times when your child
has nothing to do; what then? You will need to have some toys
around or at least some activities lined up for his/her entertainment.
It is generally the younger ones who get restless quite easily; older
ones still manage to utilize their time on their own. It is for this toddler
that you will need to get some playthings. Now, these toys should prove
safe as well as fun for your child. Could we drop a few suggestions to
help you out?
• Children love to move around and explore their small world! You could
have the game of “let’s pretend” to encourage creativity. The movements
of favorite animals can be imitated. Another good thing about this game
is that your child will understand how his/her body moves and functions.
• There are games that consist of sorting (according to color, size,
etc.), as well as matching. This will aid in helping your child understand
the surrounding environment better.
• Would you like to improve your child’s hand-eye coordination? Then
go in for jigsaw puzzles, Lincoln Logs, LEGOS, building blocks, interlocking
blocks, sand toys, etc. Wrist movements are also enhanced by these activities.
• As a matter of fact, some fun toys and games carry over into older
years too. For instance, sand toys, blocks, pull toys, stacking cups and
shape boxes are enjoyed equally well by one-year-olds as well as two-year-olds!
• It is important to ensure that your child gets every opportunity to
climb, jump, hop, skip, roll and run. Physical activity should be practiced
from an early age. There are plenty of games to encourage this—follow
the leader, rolling down hills, musical chairs, ring-around-a-rosy and
Simon Says.
• As your child grows older, he/she will love ride-on toys with wheels
on them! Later on, you can get a tricycle or even a wagon.
Now, it is imperative that your youngster wear a safety helmet whenever
he is on his small vehicle. If adults have survived life-threatening situations
because of helmets, the same holds true for children too. According to
the NHTSA or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, bike helmets
can bring down head injuries (85%) and also reduce brain injuries (88%).
And these helmets
are quite reasonably priced. Discount stores offer them for a low cost
of $15. Your child can use a helmet for several years, since it is not
clothing to be outgrown! There are two to three sets of foam-fitting pads
inside a helmet to protect your child’s head. These pads can be replaced
by thinner ones as your child’s head increases in size.
Unlike earlier years when neither parents nor children realized the importance
of a safety helmet,
today they are wiser. Of course, public awareness and state laws have
done their bit too, to enhance the popularity of these helmets that are
so much better-looking and better-fitting than the previous ones
